The DVD that comes with this book contains the first CD image of the Slackware 12 distribution. Slackware is the oldest surviving Linux system and continues to have a loyal following among Linux enthusiasts. To begin installing Slackware to your hard disk, insert the DVD into your PC's DVD drive, reboot, and type the following from the boot prompt:
boot: slack


Chapter 14 tells you how to install Slackware on your computer from this book's DVD or an official Slackware CD. Chapter 3 describes how to configure a simple window manager for Slackware. Ubuntu 7.10


The Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) installation and live CD are contained on the DVD that comes with this book. That image can be used to run live, and then install, a minimal desktop system. Further software installation can be done from the Internet, after the basic install is done. To boot the Ubuntu live CD image from the DVD that comes with this book, insert the DVD into your PC's DVD drive, reboot, and type the following from the boot prompt: boot: ubuntu


Your computer will boot a live CD version of Ubuntu that is intended to be used as a desktop system. An icon on the desktop lets you install the contents of the CD image to your computer's hard disk. The procedure for booting and installing Ubuntu 7.10 is in Chapter 17.


Mandriva


The Mandriva One 2008.0 live CD is contained on the DVD that comes with this book. This live CD contains a desktop-oriented Mandriva distribution that can be booted live, and then used to install the contents of the Mandriva One live CD to hard disk.
To start Mandriva One from the DVD, insert the DVD into your computer's DVD drive, reboot the computer, and type the following at the boot prompt:
boot: mandriva


You can run and install Mandriva One as described in Chapter 16. You can also refer to Chapter 16 for information about other versions of Mandriva.
