Gentoo 2007.1 Linux

The Gentoo minimal install CD image is included on the DVD that comes with this book. With the Gentoo CD, you can install a minimal Linux system, to which you can add any of the nearly 7,000 software packages that are available with Gentoo. Those packages can be obtained over a network connection or from a local CD, DVD, or hard disk. (A procedure for installing from the minimal Gentoo install CD is described in Chapter 13.)

This same minimal install CD is included on the CD that comes with this book. To boot the Gentoo minimal CD from the DVD that comes with this book, insert the DVD into your PC's DVD drive, reboot, and type the following from the boot prompt: boot: gentoo

Refer to Chapter 13 for information on using Gentoo. Procedures described in that chapter let you either install a desktop system from binary packages or build much of the Gentoo operating system from scratch, specifically for your computer hardware, downloading needed packages from the Internet.

Freespire 2.0

Freespire is the free, community-driven Linux system that is sponsored by Linspire, Inc. (makers of the Linspire commercial desktop Linux system). The Freespire 2.0 CD is included on the DVD that comes with this book. The Freespire CD can be run in several different ways. You can either run it as a live CD or start an installer to install the contents of that CD to your computer's hard disk. Freespire also lets you launch the gparted utility from the boot prompt so that you can change your computer's hard disk partitions before installing Freespire.
